Thereโs nothing more attractive than elevating your wealth confidence. Period.
Iโve become increasingly concerned about the systemic challenges facing women in our industry, which ventures beyond typical inclusion issues and touches on sabotage and harassment. I have personally witnessed highly talented women being driven from roles through subtle, passive-aggressive tactics and actively hostile environments.
To be frank, the anecdotes Iโve personally encountered are deeply disturbing. I have directly observed juvenile, but deliberate, acts of harassment designed to create discomfort.
Incidentally, my partners in the industry, whether peers, friends, colleagues or romantic in nature, have had a tendency to confide in private. I do not know why, I suppose those who recognize their shared experiences will determine in their own right.
I can confidently say, until this moment, I have yet to share these experiences with others, as I did not feel it be my place. These experiences have ranged from being subject to temperature control with the goal of bodily reaction, to having feminine care product spread across their trading desks.
I was once confided in by a young, high-performing woman whose natural African American hairstyle was deemed 'unprofessional' by both colleagues and human resources, a clear failure of our industry to embrace equity.
This has even reached as far as intentional undermining by colleagues or family members, which severely impacts a womenโs career and mental health. Imagine the difficulty, witnessing a female wealth peer consistently reduced to tears after a day of labor, directly attributable to internal familial conflicts. The painful reality was that no one could decipher the reason behind her sustained, individualized distress.
In the sake of brevity, I will limit this share to only a select representative reasons which have compelled my strive for female empowerment and advocacy.
I have seen the visible toll first-hand, and it is unacceptable. Why am I sharing this?
With each passing day, reaching the American Dream is one nearer reality. In the spirit of pursuing independence, I have started to define a holistic vision of entrepreneurship. Aligning each aspect, from culture and key challenges to solve, to selecting the right partners and methods of support. Ultimately, I am building a practice where every relationship is intentional and centered on mutual success.
After all, we know the industry needs top talent and diverse perspectives for success. I believe we, as peers and leaders, have a responsibility to ensure our environments are not intentionally disadvantageous, rather safe.
I have made a personal, concerted effort to actively support, mentor, and prepare the next generation of women leaders to thrive, not only survive, in an industry with a challenging historical pretense.
I welcome the chance to discuss thoughts on practical, confidential steps we can take within our influence to better support and retain women in asset management and wealth advice.
Will you join in building a world of inclusion?
